Launch of the State of
the African Diaspora TV Channel: A New Era for African Narratives
On July 26, 2024, the
State of the African Diaspora Parliament (SOAD) launched a groundbreaking
initiative that promises to transform the social media landscape for Africans
in the Diaspora and across the continent. The virtual launch of SOAD TV, a
digital platform marks a significant step in reclaiming the narrative for
people of African descent, a voice that has been marginalized for centuries.
Mr.
Melvin Brown, President of the State of the African Diaspora Parliament,
emphasized the importance of this platform as a tool to facilitate high-level
communication between Africa and its Diaspora. He noted that SOAD TV will serve
as a vital mechanism for organizing, creating content, and disseminating
information about the work of Members of Parliament, Presidents of National
Delegations, and Regional Vice Presidents. Additionally, the channel will cover
general news, cultural activities, sports events, and much more.
The objectives of SOAD TV
are multifaceted:
● Communication: Strengthening the flow
of information between Africa and the Diaspora.
●
Technology Development:
Promoting advancements that support the channel's operations.
●
Capacity Building (Training):
Equipping individuals with the necessary skills for effective media production
and dissemination.
●
Job Creation:
Providing employment opportunities within the media and communications sectors.
●
Bridging the Gap:
Fostering closer ties between the African continent and its Diaspora.
During the launch, Mr.
Dike Sam, Technical Director of SOAD TV, introduced the communication team. The
team is coordinated by Mr. Melvin Brown, with the support of VPP Eileen Wai
Cheng, Asia and Pacific Regional Vice President and Center Coordinator, and HRH
Princess Palesa Kambule, President of
National Delegation in South Africa, who is in charge of communication.
Their collective expertise is expected to ensure the success of SOAD TV.
In an era where
misinformation and propaganda can easily undermine cultures and nations, the
launch of SOAD TV is a timely response. The channel aims to provide an
alternative media outlet that reflects the true stories and experiences of
Africans and their descendants worldwide.
The launch event was
graced by various dignitaries and organizations, including the World College of
Mayors, with its registration office in California, United States, led by CEO
Alhaji Alhassan Abdallah Musah, Nerisa Kamar from Information Africa Organisation
and Peter Asemenyo, Founder and Leader of the Shebre Musical and Dance Group
based in Ghana, among others.
Mr. Melvin Brown extended
his gratitude to all participants and congratulated the entire team for their
outstanding work. He urged them to continue their efforts to strengthen SOAD TV
and ensure it becomes a powerful voice for the African Diaspora.
SOAD TV will also play a
crucial role in aligning with the broader objectives of the African Union's
Diaspora Division. This Division acts as the central hub for engaging the
African Diaspora in the continent's development and integration, promoting participation
across the AU's agenda, including Agenda 2063. By facilitating regular
communication, accrediting Diaspora organizations, and fostering collaboration
with AU organs, the Division ensures that the global African family remains
connected and active in building the African Union.
